You Are A Nerd

Stereotypes exist for a reason.

In this day and age, there is no reason to stay typical.

Master Rokk here. See that picture above? That is the result of a Google search for a “typical gamer”. I chose that picture to post up there because it was it was both funny to look at, and didn’t immediately slap me in the face with the truth. The truth being that society looks at gamers much like that episode of South Park reflects – as antisocial, out of shape, mouth-breathing, nerds.

There’s nothing wrong with being a nerd. I mean, what is a nerd anyway? According to the good folks at Google, a nerd is “a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious”.

Okay, that sucks. Bullshit on that. But definition the second says that a nerd is “a single-minded expert in a particular technical field.”

Now that, THAT is something I can get behind, and it goes way beyond the obvious answer of “computer nerd.” I say we take the word “nerd” back from some negative and push it towards something positive, like more of an enthusiast. Take the “technical” word out of the second definition and really made the word Nerd sing. That guy you know who is totally into cars? Yeah, he’s a “car nerd”. That guy with a room full of Elvis memorabilia? He’s an “Elvis nerd”. The bro who works out all the time, eats pre-prepped meals out of tupperware containers and has protein powder as a food group all its own? A “gym nerd”.

Jen Widerstrom, one of the new trainers for the latest season of the Biggest Loser, practices what she preaches as far as health and fitness goes. You could call her a Fitness Nerd, and I don’t think she’d object to that. I wouldn’t object to anything Jen says.

And yes, before you even ask, “sex nerd” is a thing. Just ask Sex Nerd Sandra!

She even has a podcast! Fill you ears with sex nerd knowledge!

So screw the negativity behind the word “nerd”. Many people are nerds, they just won’t admit it because it makes them seem lesser. It’s 2015 people. Let’s start putting these labels aside and just start seeing others as people.
